In parts of Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia, the need for firewood is a primary driver of forest loss. The consequences are dire. These regions, rich in biodiversity, face severe ecological disruption due to unsustainable fuel wood harvesting practices. Forests, which serve as carbon sinks, lose their ability to sequester carbon.
As trees are cut down, the stored carbon is released into the atmosphere. Doing so intensifies the greenhouse effect and leads to erratic weather patterns, rising sea levels, and other climate-related challenges. Deforestation also fragments habitats, displacing wildlife and disrupting ecological balance.
