Safeguarding Health With Solar Cooking

Safeguarding Health in Remote Communities With Solar Cooking

For millions of families living in remote villages across South America and sub-Saharan Africa, the daily act of cooking carries a deadly risk. With over 2.6 billion people lacking access to clean cooking fuels, households often resort to using polluting open fires or rudimentary stoves fueled by kerosene, biomass, and coal.

The resulting smoke creates a silent killer that claims millions of lives every year, more than malaria. Women who often handle cooking duties are disproportionately affected and bear the brunt of this invisible threat. Inhalation of biomass smoke triggers a cascade of health problems, from respiratory illnesses to cataracts. Fortunately, solar cooking offers a safe and sustainable alternative.

Health Risks of Inhaling Biomass Smoke (wood smoke)

The World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that biomass smoke levels from cooking fires can exceed international safety standards of fine particulate matter or PM 2.5 (aka soot) by 100 times. Inhaling the acrid smoke within poorly ventilated dwellings has numerous detrimental effects, including:

  • Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs): Environmental concerns regarding deforestation were a primary driver for adopting solar cooking. However, the rise in respiratory illnesses caused by cooking fire smoke has become a major public health concern. The WHO estimates that smoke inhalation is responsible for the deaths of over 1.5 million women and children ARIs like pneumonia are a leading cause of these fatalities.
  • Lower Birth Weights: Exposure to biomass smoke during pregnancy can negatively impact fetal development by restricting oxygen flow to the fetus, which leads to lower birth weights. This can have long-term consequences, such as increased risk of chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders later in the child’s life.
  • Cataracts: Prolonged exposure to biomass smoke can increase the risk of cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens that can result in vision loss. A Research Gate study shows that ocular and visual acuity symptoms in women including severe vision impairment and blindness are very common among biomass fuel users.
  • Nervous and Muscular Fatigue: Polluting smoke from open fires irritates the respiratory system, leading to fatigue, headaches, and difficulty breathing. Such exposure can negatively affect a person’s daily activities and quality of life.

These are just a few of the reported health risks associated with inhaling biomass smoke. Regrettably, more than 80% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa has to rely on biomass, kerosene, or coal due to a lack of access to cleaner stoves and fuels. The cumulative effect of these conditions creates a major burden on individuals and healthcare systems in remote areas.

Solar Cooking Benefits in Remote Communities

Cooking using solar offers an innovative solution to reduce or completely eradicate the risks posed by traditional cooking methods. Solar ovens harness sunlight to provide a clean cooking method, contributing to improved health in the following ways:

  • No Smoke Emission: Unlike traditional cooking methods, solar cookers operate without generating smoke. It eliminates the harmful respiratory risks associated with biomass smoke inhalation.
  • Reduced Carbon Monoxide (CO) Emissions: Traditional cooking methods often release copious amounts of CO, a colorless, odorless, and extremely poisonous gas. Solar cookers mitigate this health threat.
  • Improved Indoor Air Quality: Solar cookers improve indoor air quality by eliminating smoke from open wood fires, effectively leading to a healthier living environment for families.

These health benefits translate to a tangible improvement in the lives of families in remote communities. Children are less likely to suffer from respiratory illnesses, women experience reduced health hazards related to smoke exposure, and general well-being is greatly enhanced.
